Software as a service (SaaS) is increasingly becoming the choice for companies because of its scalability, easy upgradation and no need to rely on installing and running servers. SaaS is taking over the cloud market and studies say that about 75% of apps will be SaaS-powered by 2020.
Enterprise companies even B2C companies move to SaaS because of the following reasons:
Scalability - Scalability of the platform determines how far, the application can meet your needs. In an ideal SaaS platform, expanding vertically and/or horizontally as usage grows should be possible.
Easy upgrade - Updation of a properly implemented SaaS platform from the developer side won’t even affect the customers. Version upgradation & maintenance downtime is comparatively very low compared to on-premise software as it can be done from one place for all the customers.
Payment options - Enterprises now don’t want to pay for purchasing software, installing it on their own server & pay & maintain the systems. It’s all done at one administration & they just have to compensate only for what they use based on the pricing plan. Paying software only for the resources you need is cool, right?
High reliability - The downtime for a SaaS-based platform is very low comparatively.
Enterprise level security - Modern SaaS applications are run on enterprise-level security as data of a company is completely protected and is only accessible for their team. There are even Database level security & services to meet that.
Here are key SaaS trends to watch out in 2019:
There are 2 types of SaaS applications - Horizontal & Vertical.
When horizontal SaaS focuses on clients across any business domain or any industry, Vertical SaaS targets a specific domain or specific set of customers. Vertical SaaS platforms solve problems in a specific niche and comparatively easy to build as the basic requirement of the software won’t change much and the software doesn’t have to be very generic meeting requirements of customers in different domains.
PaaS based services
When SaaS emerged to be a growing trend, enterprises started to move to a PaaS (Platform as a Service) to provide a wide range of integrations & add-ons. Studies say that PaaS based development help companies acquire more customers & builds strong partnerships with other businesses. And PaaS platforms are usually more robust, flexible, and accessible which helps you scale your product easily.
Micro-SaaS applications are usually add-ons to existing platforms to enhance or the existing SaaS product. They are usually run by a small team, with small costs, a narrow focus, and a small user base. Micro-SaaS apps usually start as a side project or an R&D and get a small but steady monthly recurring income.
Automation & Intelligence
Today, AI & Automation is taking up the whole business world and changing the way organisations are run. Companies are trying to automate whatever they can at any cost. AI-based systems optimize businesses process, increase productivity in work and efficiency automating repetitive tasks & supporting human work.
Many SaaS platforms utilise Machine learning & algorithms to automate processes using automated process workflows, AI-based chatbots, Analytics and automated-reporting. Using artificial intelligence & automation in modern SaaS world helps also in reduced work, easy management, personalisation, and high productivity of the end user.
